Junior

Have a close look at the two photos of one of our lovely patients Junior, and see if you can spot the difference between them…..!

Well done if you spotted that Junior is missing his hind right leg in one of the photos!

Here’s Junior’s story…

Junior is a friendly 6 year old Bengal cross cat who presented to us in February for a new 2cm mass found on his right hind leg. We quickly decided to investigate to find out what this may be as its location was very tricky down at the end of his leg where there is not much free tissue present. We started with an investigation called a ‘fine needle aspirate’ where we sucked some of the masse’s cells out through a needle for analysis at a laboratory however this came back with some concerns and a presumptive diagnosis of a more worrying type of mass called a ‘Mast Cell Tumour’.

After some discussion with Juniors family we made the decision to try and remove the mass knowing that this may not be fully possible due to its location. During his procedure, it became clear that it would sadly not be possible to remove all the mass as it had become much more involved than we had hoped and therefore we had to swap to our plan B, to amputate his leg to prevent the mass spreading and save Junior’s life.

Luckily, we had had these conversations with Juniors family before the day of surgery and happily Junior took to the three legged life very quickly and efficiently! We are really pleased to say that we have since had the all clear from the samples sent off following his surgery and so Junior should go on to live a happy and full life on his three legs.

Big cheer for Junior!
